Miner perishes in rockfall
Miners continue to enter the mine and burrow deep into the hillside in search of coal, despite being aware of the dangers involved.
Police have released the name of an illegal miner who was killed in a rock- fall at the disused coal mine near the Ermelo Golf Course last week. He was Njabulo Ndebele, age unknown.
The latest incident occurred on Friday morning when a tunnel collapsed, trapping the miner under heavy rocks.
Miners continue to enter the mine and burrow deep into the hillside in search of coal, despite being aware of the dangers involved.
Warnings not to enter the mine are disregarded.
The fact that several deaths have occurred at the mine in the past does not deter the miners, who say they are willing to risk their lives to extract the low-grade coal they sell to the community.
