He was Mr Paul Whysall (74) of Johannesburg.

Mr Whysall died instantly when the vehicle he was travelling in slammed head-on into the overhanging trailer section an abnormal load truck transporting transformers to the Khusile power station.

Parts of the Nissan Tiidia were ripped off due to the severe impact and were stuck to the side of the trailer.

The main body of the car came to a standstill about 200 metres further down the road.

The accident occurred despite oncoming traffic being directed to the side of the road by escort vehicles.

Police believe a truck travelling in the same direction as Mr Whysall moved to the left of the road as directed but was overtaken by Mr Whysall before he saw the oncoming abnormal load.

The driver of the heavy truck was visibly upset after the collision and said there was little he could do to avoid the accident.

“He just kept coming at me. With a heavy load like this it’s impossible to move out of the way quickly.”

Traffic between Ermelo and Bethal was delayed for several hours while officials cleared the scene.
