Deputy DCS Minister visits Ermelo

Minister Makwetla said he was optimistic and inspired by the progress.

The Deputy Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Mr Thabang Makwetla, visited the Ermelo Correctional Centre on Monday on a fact-finding mission.

The purpose of the visit was for the minister to acquaint himself with the progress made on the programme instituted by the Ermelo and Volksrust correctional facilities in which unemployed youth, mainly farmworkers, are enrolled in a one-year agricultural learnership programme.

20 candidates from Ermelo and seven from Volksrust are enrolled for the current year. The agricultural farm is near the Umzimvelo School and learners benefit from the produce.

The programme consists of 70 per cent theory and 30 per cent practical studies and certificates of competence are issued to successful candidates on completion of the course.

The programme is facilitated by DCS and funded by the Nhlandladla Foundation, a non-profit organisation that assists the students with a monthly stipend of R800.

Deputy Minister Makwetla said he was optimistic and inspired by the progress, but suggested that not only farmworkers, but also youth from the townships should be identified and included in the programme.

The Deputy Minister concluded his visit with an inspection of the correctional facility.
