Communities take part in Rotary family health campaign

This year 825 community members attended the RFHD over the three days in Ermelo.

The Ermelo Rotary Club hosted a three-day Rotary Family Health Day (RFHD) at the Upper Room Christian Fellowship Centre last Wednesday to Friday.

The Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, invited all community members in South Africa to attend the family health days that took place in all provinces. The programme led by thousands of Rotarian volunteers, reached citizens in dense urban as well as rural areas, and provided them with important annual health screens both for infectious and non-communicable diseases as well as lifesaving immunisation for children.

This year the RFHD was carried out in 120 sites across the country, including Ermelo, where these services were offered: HIV/AIDS counselling and testing, TB testing and screening, diabetes screening, blood pressure screening and healthy active lifestyle education among others.

Rotary is the largest volunteer service organisation in the world with 1.2 million members worldwide and 34 000 clubs in 200 countries. It is best known for being a key partner organisation in the eradication of polio.

In South Africa, there are 225 clubs with more than 5000 members and their role is to mobilise the local community to attract citizens to their events. This was the third RFHD campaign in South Africa.

Last year, over 65 000 community members used the free health care facilities in 140 sites over the three days. RFHD was in partnership with civil society, government and businesses.

Some of the stakeholders included the Department of Health, MTN South Africa, SABC and Caxton and its community newspapers among others.
