Watery stand-off ends in police van

Alleged Sweet thief involved in two hour stand-off on island in Pet Dam.

An unidentified man ended up on an island in the middle of Pet Dam yesterday afternoon.

According to witnesses the man allegedly stole sweets from a 24 hour convenience store. The cashier raised alarm and the man ran away.

This resulted in a chase that ended up four blocks away at the Pet Dam. Determined not to be caught, the man waded into the water and swam towards the island in the middle of the dam.

After disappearing under water a few times he reached the safety the of the island.

Onlookers tried to convince the man to give up and return to shore, but to no avail.

Emergency workers realised that they should bring the man back to shore as he might not be able to return safely on his own accord.

Two members of Ermelo’s Fire Dept and a police diver entered the water to apprehend the suspect.

As they approached the island the suspect tried to flee and hid in the water amongst the foliage. After a lengthy search in the darkness he was captured and returned to shore where he was taken to the police station for questioning.
