Youngster arrested on nyaope charge

Nyaope, also called whoonga, is a unique drug to South Africa and is highly addictive

Police arrested a 21-year-old Ermelo man on charges of dealing in and possession of a banned substance after he was found with 374 “sloopies” or “pinches” of the drug nyaope.

The street value is estimated to be R7 480.

Nyaope, or whoonga as it is also called, is a unique drug to South Africa and is highly addictive.

The drug is smoked and can contain a number of substances such as ARVs, rat poison, acids, detergent powder, pool cleaner and bicarbonate of soda among others and is mixed with dagga and heroine.

A person can become addicted to the drug after using it only once and withdrawal symptoms are accompanied by excruciating abdominal and muscular pains.
