Msukaligwa undertakes cleaning campaign

Msukaligwa Municipality's Operation Clean My Ward is currently under way.

Msukaligwa Municipality’s Operation Clean My Ward is currently under way.

The purpose of the campaign is to create environmental awareness, clear illegal dumps, prune overgrown trees and clean cemeteries, among other things.

Thus far, more than 4400 tons of waste has been disposed of since the beginning of the campaign on 1 June in which several municipal officers, councillors, ward committees and community development workers participated.

According to the office of the Director of Community Service, Mr B.Sibeko, this campaign is in accordance with relevant laws in the Bill of Rights, which states in part that everyone has the right to a protected environment that is not harmful to their health or well-being and the prevention of pollution and ecological degradation.

Currently, out of 40 932 households in Msukaligwa Municipality, only 31 391 receive waste collection services which means 30 per cent of the households do not receive such services due to the number of rural and informal settlements, inaccessible roads, especially Extension 33 and 34. as well as old and unreliable vehicles. This results in people dumping their refuse and unwanted rubbish on street corners and other public open spaces, posing serious health risks and creating the possibility of litigation.

Environmental health practitioners suggest that an unhealthy environment attracts flies and mosquitoes which carry harmful germs and diseases which are dangerous to children as their immune system is vulnerable to infections, especially by airborne bacteria.

The campaign is scheduled to run until 7 August.
