Petrol price increases significantly.

Although the slight decrease in fuel prices that was announced early last month brought some relief things will change on Wednesday, 3 June as significant increases were announced.

The price of petrol will increase by 47 cents per litre, the price of diesel by between 46 and 49 cents per litre and illuminating paraffin by 56 cents per litre.

The price of liquefied gas will increase by R1 per kilogram.

According to the Department of Energy the main reason for this increase is the high crude oil prices which resulted in higher prices for all petroleum products.

“Despite the relative stability of the Rand to US Dollar exchange rate, the basic fuel price has been driven upwards by increases in international petroleum prices. Although some price stability has been evident in recent days, a substantial appreciation in either the exchange rate or international pricing would be needed to maintain the current fuel price come month end,” said the Automobile Association (AA), when commenting on the Central Fund’s mid-month unaudited fuel price date.

The AA also urged motorists to keep fuel-efficient models in mind when replacing their vehicles and to adopt fuel-efficient driving techniques and routes in containing fuel costs.
