Shack dwellers in Wesselton endure stinking hardship

Ermelo: Residents in Jiyane Street Wesselton are at their wits end because a manhole on a main sewerage pipeline has been spilling sewage non-stop for more than three weeks. An angry Ms Sonto Zwane and several other residents expressed their disgust at the Msukaligwa Municipality for not attending to the problem even though it was reported at least three weeks ago.

According to the residents the matter has been reported to the municipality several times since then.At times the the stinking sewage flows into the front yard of Ms Zwane’s humble shack and at at one stage flowed into her dwelling as well as that of her neighbours.Residents have had to devise a makeshift plan to divert the sewage away from their homes and onto the street.

“My six-month-old child Samuel is constantly ill and has developed chest problems. I can’t put the child down so that he can play because the stuff is everywhere. Even myself, I cough all the time because of the horrible smell. The authorities don’t seem to care about us,” said. Ms Zwane.

The Highvelder has forwarded the complaint to the relevant authority.
