Politicians clear the air

"Why did Phosa appoint Mabuza?"

The ANC leadership in the Gert Sibande Region has called for calm and reassured its members and tripartite alliance partners, the SACP, that no bad blood exists between them in the region.

This follows the recent spat between ANC and SACP members in Kanyamazane, Mbombela.

Addressing hundreds of ANC members in a packed Gert Sibande Municipal Council Chamber last Thursday, ANC regional chairman, Mr Vusi Shongwe, warned the movement’s members against individuals instigating trouble within the organisation.

Mr Shongwe also spoke harshly about ill discipline with some of the members that create a negative image of the organisation.

“We are heading towards local government elections next year and a number of people will try underhand tactics to gain popularity in an attempt to secure votes. Be warned that no stone will be left unturned in calling to order and disciplining members found guilty of such behaviour,” he said.

Part of the special Regional General Council (RGC) meeting also attended by the ANCYL and ANCWL was to adopt a media statement where the Gert Sibande Region confirmed its unequivocal support of Mpumalanga Premier, Mr David Mabuza, against recent allegations by Mathew Phosa of him being a political spy of the previous apartheid government.

In the statement, the ANC in Gert Sibande Region questions the truthfulness of the allegations by Mr Phosa who appointed Mr Mabuza in his cabinet as MEC for Education while he was premier of Mpumalanga. They question why Phosa appointed Mabuza if he was a spy and why these allegations only surface now.

“To this day we are yet to receive proof of the political killings that Mr Mabuza is rumoured to have ordered and any other evidence linking him to being a political spy for the previous government,” Mr Shongwe replied to questions from the media.

Mr Shongwe concluded by saying people must not link the attacks at Kanyamazane as a general political in-fight between the ANC and the SACP, but as an isolated matter.
