Children benefit from police donation

“I must admit, I was unaware of the sheer scale of the work done by the Ermelo Christian Social Services (CSS) . It certainly is a huge task and to manage like they do on the limited resources at their disposal is most admirable,” said Capt Schilling.

After being adjudicated the best Tracker unit in the country last year, the K9-unit of the Ermelo Police donated their prize of R10 000 to the Ermelo Christian Social Services (CSS) towards the running of the Child and Youth Care Centres.

The cheque was handed over to the manager of the CYCC, Ms Issie Dippenaar, during a short ceremony at the unit last Wednesday.

The K9-unit boasted a 100 per cent recovery rate in operations over the past two years, successfully recovering 28 vehicles with a total value of over R11-million. In all, 19 arrests were made.

For this achievement the unit was rewarded with the prestigious Tracker Award at a gala function held at Kyalami late last year.

Part of the prize was an amount of R10 000 to be donated to a charity of their choice.

The K9 commander of Ermelo, Capt Ronnie Schilling, said that since identifying the CYCC as the charity of choice, he was amazed at the sterling work done by Ms Dippenaar and her team in providing a stable home environment for children whose family life had been disrupted due to circumstance.

“I must admit, I was unaware of the sheer scale of the work done by these people. It certainly is a huge task and to manage like they do on the limited resources at their disposal is most admirable,” said Capt Schilling.

In accepting the donation Ms Dippenaar thanked Capt Schilling and his team and said that the money was most welcome. She stressed that the aim of the Youth Centres was to provide a normal family environment for the children in their care.

“This means providing children from all walks of life with a safe home to go to and to come from, with normal school attendance and activities, just as any child deserves. You can imagine this costs far more than we receive from the state; therefore we rely heavily on donations from the public.

You can be sure this donation is very much appreciated,” she said.
