Metro cops caught on camera allegedly taking bribe (video)

CCTV footage has emerged showing two metro police officers allegedly taking a bribe in Westdene, Johannesburg.

In the footage, obtained by Westdene Johannesburg CROW, the two unidentified metro police officers are seen pulling over a vehicle on New Year’s day at 10:26am.

Towards the end of the footage, one of the officers seemingly takes a bribe from the driver of a black Golf.

Thereafter, both the Golf and metro police vehicle drives off.

Johannesburg Metro Police Chief Superintendent, Wayne Minnaar told The Citizen that JMPD cannot respond on the video and allegations until a sworn statement is made by the Westdene Johannesburg CROW.

“The department is still waiting for the Westdene Johannesburg CROW to lodge a complaint in order to allow internal investigations and disciplinary processes to take place.”

Minnaar added that The JMPD does not tolerate any act corruption, therefore if the two officers are found guilty, they will be dismissed with immediate effect.

Westdene Johannesburg CROW coordinator, Frikkie Boties said the video clearly identifies the officers taking a bribe and will make a sworn statement on this video.

In response to the validity of the footage, the Justice Project South Africa said: “The fact that the colour balance is out on the camera doesn’t alter the validity of the evidential value the video material has in court.”

Since all JMPD vehicles have tracking in them, it will not be difficult to establish whether the vehicles and the officers in it were at the said place at the said time, added the Justice Project South Africa.

On the very same day, a metro police officer was arrested in Protea Glen, near Soweto, for allegedly asking a truck driver for a bribe.

It was alleged the officer demanded money from the truck driver in return for his vehicle’s licence disk.

The truck driver informed the police of the incident and the officer was arrested on Wednesday night after police set a trap for him, Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said.
