Chrissie graves desecrated

The graves in this small cemetery, which lies midway between the village and the lake, date back to the 1930s and 1940s

A derelict family graveyard on the Lake Chrissie (Chrissiesmeer) commonage has been the target of one or more grave robbers.
The photograph shows two exhumed graves, next to each other. Only one tombstone is still visible and bears the name of Louis Johannes Wessels, who died in 1943.
The headstone of the other grave probably lies buried under sand.
The graves in this small cemetery, which lies midway between the village and the lake, date back to the 1930s and 1940s and carry the surnames of Wessels, Van der Merwe and Swart.
The matter has been reported to the Lake Chrissie Police who will investigate.
People who have information about the desecration of the graves are requested to contact Const N.P. Thela on 079 891 5069.
Any information about the history of the graveyard will be welcomed by Ton Sanders. Phone him on 017 847 0008 after 17:00. (Sent in by Ton Sanders, Lake Chrissie.)
