GS College rewards top students

Hlatshwayo was lost for words; however, he credited his achievement to dedication and hard work.

Ululating and whistling could be heard a mile away as top students of Gert Sibande Further Education and Training (GSFET), Ermelo took to the stage to receive their academic awards in a packed college hall last Wednesday.

Top performing students in different levels were presented with merit certificates, tablets and a laptop.

The best performing student per level each received a tablet, and the overall winner, B.N. Hlatshwayo in Level 4, received a laptop.

Hlatshwayo was lost for words; however, he credited his achievement to dedication and hard work.

Other winners included P.N. Mthali who was recognised for achieving distinctions in all seven her subjects in Office Administration Level 2.

Two students from the Sibanesetfu campus, Mbali Xaba (Office Administration) and Innocent Luvuno (Civil Engineering) with overall 18 and 11 distinctions respectively over their three years of study, were the recipients of a very special award: a laptop each and a trip to a college in England.

The two students will jet off to the United Kingdom in April for a three weeks’ programme where they will hone their business management and entrepreneurship skills.

During the awards ceremony, the two were described as sponges that soak up knowledge, and despite their relatively humble background, remained committed through their mental strength, self-motivation and positive attitude.

The best lecturer award went to Ms C. Prinsloo whose students achieved a 72 per cent pass rate compared to the national average of 41 per cent.

College principal Mr Nick Balkrishen spoke about the importance of consistent and high academic performance and how it benefits the college.

“Government has invested billions of rands into FET colleges, therefore students that perform academically receive more financial support from the government,” said Mr Balkrishen.

Students were also informed that support centres would be fully functional from the second term.

Services that will be provided from the centres include academic support, career guidance, financial assistance and computer rooms, among others.

In his closing remarks, Mr Balkrishen reminded students that when employers are recruiting, they select the best performing students.
