Nomvula makes a difference

“I’ve had people talking behind my back that they want to sort me out, but that has not and will not keep me from doing my job,” said Nomvula.

The MEC Excellence Awards hosted by the Department of Community Safety Security and Liaison at Gert Sibande District Municipality may have come and gone, but Ms Nomvula Mhlongo has not yet lost her excitement.

She was presented with the MEC special award for her contribution and hard work as a police reservist at the Ermelo Station.

During the handover, MEC Shongwe said Nomvula Mhlongo is one of the special officers he has worked with and through her tireless efforts the Ermelo Central Business District (CBD) is kept crime free.

Nomvula has been with the police service for six years and has received a number of achievements and accolades for her commitment.

An incident that still stands out for her was one on the Amersfort road to which she and one of her seniors responded. A father and his daughter were trapped in a car that had overturned, but because of their prompt response, they were able to save them.

The mother of two admits that this job comes with certain challenges. She has on several occasions received threats from people she has put behind bars or their accomplice.

“I’ve had people talking behind my back that they want to sort me out, but that has not and will not keep me from doing my job,” said Nomvula.

W/O Dumi Sibeko, who has also worked closely with Nomvula, speaks highly of her.

When asked about Nomvula’s achievement at the awards, Mr Sibeko said she deserves it for all the hard work she has put in.

Nomvula has also been deployed to the South African, Mozambique and Swaziland borderline for three months and has cracked dagga trafficking with a street value of R15 000 and R27 000 respetively as well as stock theft with a value of R16 000.

Nomvula warns her colleagues against taking bribes as their future is worth much more than quick cash.
