Accident claims seven lives, injures 41

The accident happened at about 2am about 20km from Ermelo

In one of the worst accidents during the past holiday season, seven people were killed and at least 41 people were injured in a head-on collision between a taxi licensed to carry 20 passengers and a sedan with five occupants on the road between Ermelo and Piet Retief on 29 December.

The accident happened at about 2am about 20km from Ermelo.

Emergency workers from the Ermelo Fire Department had to use the jaws-of-life to free some of the injured and deceased from both vehicles.

Paramedics from the Provincial Ambulance Service, ER24 and Life Care Response treated the injured on the scene before transporting them to various hospitals. The road was closed for nearly three and a half hours while clearing-up operations took place.

The cause of the accident incident is being investigated.
