Camden power station holds safety drill

A “bomb scare” scenario was staged and various weak and strong points were highlighted at the debriefing session afterwards.

The local media was sent into a frenzy last Wednesday when word spread that an explosion had occurred at Eskom’s Camden Power Station.

It was however soon learned that no explosion had occurred and that a safety drill in which various emergency and evacuation procedures were tested was being held.

The exercises involved emergency services from Msukaligwa Fire and Rescue, provincial and private ambulance services as well as the Eskom emergency team.

A “bomb scare” scenario was staged and various weak and strong points were highlighted at the debriefing session afterwards.

The exercise led to valuable lessons being learned by all parties.

With the Camden facility being a national key-point, exercises of this nature are carried out periodically to ensure the safety of workers as well as an uninterrupted power supply to the national grid.
