Man injured in hit-and-run

The accident happened in front of horrified onlookers who had gathered at the scene of an earlier accident.

Mr Paul Jordaan of Ermelo was seriously injured in a hit-and-run accident at about 10.10pm in Pres Fouché Street on Saturday night.

The accident happened in front of horrified onlookers who had gathered at the scene of an earlier accident.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver of a VW Golf or similar vehicle approached at high speed and failed to stop at a four-way stop at the junction with Voortrekker Street.

Despite being flagged down by helpers on the scene who were wearing reflective jackets, the driver sped past the scene and slammed into Mr Jordaan who was crossing the street.

The force of the impact flung him onto the sidewalk and left him with serious injuries to his right leg and left shoulder.

The driver of the vehicle failed to stop and sped off in the direction of Camden Avenue.

A motorist immediately gave chase, but could not manage to apprehend the suspect.

Paramedics from Life Care Response battled in dark and rainy conditions to stabilise the patient before transporting him to the Ermelo Mediclinic.

He was then transferred to the Nelspruit Mediclinic early on Sunday morning and is due to undergo an operation today (Thursday) if doctors are satisfied that the swelling in his leg has subsided sufficiently.

A prominent businessman has offered a reward of R1 000 for the first person to provide police with information that will lead to the arrest of the driver of the vehicle which could have signs of damage on the front right-hand side.

Investigating officer W/O Roelof Minnaar can be phoned at 076 123 7332 with information.
