A 43-year-old male deaf-mute suspect was arrested for allegedly killing his housemate in Chrissiesmeer last Wednesday.

Alice Caroline Farinha was found dead in her house with the suspect lying next to her with blood on his hand last Thursday morning.

A friend of the victim became worried after she (ms Farinha) did not join her for supper the previous day as they had arranged and had not responded to her phone calls and text messages. She went to investigate at the victim’s house on Thursday morning to see if she was all right. After not receiving any response at the door, she peeped through the window and was shocked by what she saw.

She reported the matter to the victim’s neighbour, who is a police officer at Chrissiesmeer and the matter was also officially reported.

According to Chrissiesmeer Police, the suspect had overdosed on pills and was admitted to the Carolina Hospital on Thursday and discharged on Friday. The Police await a post-mortem to determine the cause of death.

The suspect appeared in the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court on Monday and his case was postponed to 21 November in the Chrissiesmeer Periodical Court as the court awaits a sign language interpreter.

The suspect remains in custody at the Ermelo Correctional Centre.
