Past A.M. Zulu has in the past six years devoted her time to caring for the disabled at Kwa-Cibikhulu, Chrissiesmeer.

The mother of three is looking after 28 children and young adults at Usizo Oluhle Disable Activity Centre that was established in 2007.

Past Zulu says they offer various activities that include learning, art and drawing and empower individuals with disabilities with skills that will assist them in becoming self-reliant.

“Job opportunities are scarce, so we try to educate and empower our learners with skills that could help them start their own businesses, especially with their handwork,” said Past Zulu.

She added that they are unable to cater for a large number, because their place is small.

“The other problem is transport. If we had transport, we would be able to reach out to a number of people who need similar assistance.”

With help from the Department of Social Development they are able to cater for the children and social workers visit them from time to time to offer support.

Past Zulu is grateful to everyone who has contributed to the establishment of the centre and a number of business people from Chrissiesmeer and surroundings.

My special thanks also to my two assistants, Doctor Soko and Nompumelelo Shabangu, for the wonderful job they are doing,” she said.
