Families unite in fight against Breast Cancer

About 300 people participated in the 2km Family Fun Walk and Rawson Properties raised R 13 000 for Secunda Cansa.

SECUNDA – Rawson Properties hosted a 2 kilometres Family Fun Walk for breast cancer awareness on Saturday, 19 October at Hoërskool Secunda.

It is an annual event which aims at raising funds for Secunda Cansa.

Participants wore pink clothes and this year about 300 people participated.

Ms Jacqueline Erasmus, Cansa Cosmos community mobiliser, said: “Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting South African women.

“One in 33 women in South Africa will be diagnosed with breast cancer.

“Many breast lumps are harmless, but they should all be checked.

“It is important for women to do monthly breast self-examinations and to go for regular clinical breast examinations.

“Symptom-free women from the age of 35 should go for a mammogram, a special X-ray to detect lumps in the breast, at least every three years.

“Although breast cancer is mainly a disease of women, some men also develop breast cancer.

“Breast cancer is about 100 times less common among men than among women.

“For men the lifetime risk of getting breast cancer is about one in 788.

“The prognosis for men with breast cancer was once thought to be worse than that for women, but recent studies have not found this to be true.

“In fact, men and women with the same stage of breast cancer have a fairly similar outlook for survival.”

Rawson Properties raised R13 000 this year for Secunda Cansa.

Ms Riaan Herbst, Rawson Property Group Secunda, said: “As October is the month of breast cancer awareness, we have adopted the responsibility to have awareness annually in Secunda.

“We invited the public as well as companies to participate.

“On the 1km mark we surprised the walkers with cold water bottles as well as sweets for the kiddies who walked.

“On the finish line, which we call the Victory, the walkers got a hotdog, a cool drink as well as a medal for their brave efforts.

“This was a fun day and next year we promise to make it even bigger with more surprises on the way.”
