Several house fires have occurred in Ermelo in the recent past. In the worst one to date, on July 8,  six family members died in a fire that destroyed their home in Mandela Drive, Wesselton.

Residents have been warned to excercise utmost caution when using heating systems of any kind and when lighting fires for cooking purposes. Overloading of electrical plugs must also be avoided as short circuits and over-heating of wires are often the cause of a fire breaking out.
