Ermelo residents have mixed feelings over extended lockdown

Mr Erwin Ince said that it is for our own safety.  “It is much better to be in lockdown for an extra two weeks than having the virus and only living for about two weeks.”

The Highvelder asked a few locals how they feel about President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to extend the national lockdown and this is what people had to say:

Mr Christo Botha: “I think it was needed but that it should rather have been adjusted to suit the poor and middle-class citizens.

“It’s a slippery slope where many more people are affected negatively by the pandemic itself.”

According to Ms Chanté Naidoo, the President made a wise choice in extending the lockdown for the safety of all South Africans.

“I cannot argue with his decision, it was the right one, even though there is a lot of pressure on businesses.”

Ms Jessica Abbott: “I’m not happy about the lockdown being extended, but I know it’s to protect our people.”

Ms Boitumelo Mauku: “It’s emotionally exhausting because I am unable to buy clothes for my two-month-old, the first thing I am going to do is pay up my lay-buy clothes for my kids in preparation for the winter.”

Ms Claudia Lottering thinks it is a good thing to flatten the curve, but she is anxious for things to return back to normal.

Ms Felicia Mkhaliphi: “I absolutely saw it coming, but as much as the lockdown is needed it is very difficult to overlook the fact that people are starving.

“The period of the lockdown might even be longer because people are still queuing in long lines at shops and are still exposing themselves to the dangers of this virus, I am really worried.”

Mr Erwin Ince said that it is for our own safety.  “It is much better to be in lockdown for an extra two weeks than having the virus and only living for about two weeks.”

Mr John Whatley feels that extending the lockdown will just make things more difficult.

He said: “Community members are not complying with regulations of the national lockdown so it won’t help they extend it if they can not enforce stricter rules to keep non-essential people in their houses.

Mr Kobus Grobler: “ I do not agree with the decision, more people die of murder than this virus and lots of people are losing their incomes.”

The first thing Mr Grobler is going to do after the lockdown is to organise a Remote Control (RC) Car get together as well as a braai.
