GSDM puts graders into service

These dark streets not only make towns like Ermelo unattractive, but also contribute to high levels of crime,” said the MEC.

The MEC of the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison (DCSSL), Mr Vusi Shongwe, sent a warning to all local municipality authorities to refrain from abusing state resources, particularly the fleet.

This was during the launch of five brand-new graders at the Gert Sibande District Municipality (GSDM) last Tuesday.

The GSDM will coordinate the use of the graders in tackling the damaged and inaccessible roads in the seven municipalities across the district.

Municipal officials that have car allowance benefits will be dealt with harshly should they be found driving or using fleet cars without proper authorisation. The MEC also called on local municipalities to repair broken streetlights in a bid to fight crime.

“These dark streets not only make towns like Ermelo unattractive, but also contribute to high levels of crime,” said the MEC.

The Executive Mayor of GSDM, Cllr Mishack Nhlabathi, said the district municipality would continue supporting local municipalities in their endeavours to improve the lives of the people.

Executive mayors of Msukaligwa and Chief Albert Luthuli Municipalities, Cllrs Sipho Bongwe and Busisiwe Shiba, appreciated the intervention by the district municipality and committed themselves to using these graders to the benefit of their communities.
