Department of Water and Sanitation and Laerskool Breyten cleans the Eye of the Vaal for Mandela Day

The Department of Water and Sanitation approached Mr Louis Bates, principal of Laerskool Breyten and Mr Mzwandile Malang, from the Community Development Workers (CDW) programme to assist with the clean-up campaign.

Members of the Department of Water and Sanitation, the Community Workers’ Programme (CWP) and Laerskool Breyten cleaned the Eye of the Vaal in Breyten on 18 June.

This formed part of their Clear Rivers Campaign and the 67 minutes for Mandela Day initiative.

The objective of the campaign is to actively engage in communities to create awareness and to educate residents to protect water resources.

Mr Philani Kunene, Deputy Director for Corporate Services in the Department of Water and Sanitation, is originally from Breyten and completed his matric at Masizakhe Senior Secondary School. He wanted to give back to the community he grew up in.

They approached Mr Louis Bates, principal of Laerskool Breyten, and Mr Mzwandile Malang from the Community Development Workers (CDW) Programme, to assist with the clean-up campaign.
