TAPPED IN!

The cable provided power for high-pressure washers and vacuum cleaners

A tip-off from ACSU security guards on patrol led to an investigation by Mr Hannes Meyer and Mr Chris van Vuuren from the Msukaligwa Electricity Department into a case of electricity theft.

A journalist of the Highvelder accompanied the two municipal officials to the site in question.

Upon arrival, they discovered a makeshift power cable stuck into a meter in an uncovered mini-substation.

Only the live and neutral wires of the 2,5mm cable were connected to the meter from where it led above ground across the driveway to a carwash situated 30m away.

A multi-plug connected to the cable provided power for high-pressure washers and vacuum cleaners.

Employees of the carwash alleged they had special permission to obtain electricity from the meter.

The owner of the business was not present at the time.

Mr Meyer removed and confiscated the cable and upon further investigation at the electricity department it was established that no special permission was ever granted.

An investigation into the matter will be launched.
