The Development of football in Ghana: A Look

With online cricket betting with Betway getting popular in the country than before, it won’t be long before more people take interest in the sports.

Football was one of the gifts that Ghana got from Great Britain after colonisation.

Although it actually took effect after independence in 1957. Kwame Nkrumah, who was the first President of Ghana used football as a tool to teach about African pride.

A few decades down the line, football is the most famous sport in the nation. Next can be other sports like cricket; you never know.

The Controversies That Relate to Football In Ghana

Today though, we will be taking a look at the game of football developed in the country. For one, football in Ghana has been filled with controversies.

If we are not talking about the many coaches who get sacked each time, we are talking about the Ghana Football Federation.

Earlier this year the Ghana Football Association as a hit with one of the biggest scandals. This came after an investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ exposed corrupt officials in the GFA.

However, the creme de la crème of the whole investigation was that the top man Kwesi Nyantakyi, the President of the federation was in the middle of all this.

Although he did give out an apology this was a big blow to all the football fans in Ghana.

Time and time again the nation has continuously seen a lot of coaches getting fired. And honestly, this has led to the national football team underperforming in international leagues.

How can football be developed in Ghana?

Ghana, just like other African nations, is endowed with talents. However, tapping into these talents has proved to be very difficult. These talents have not been discovered nor have they been developed.

Even with all the controversies and wrangles facing the GFA something can be done. And this all starts at the grassroots.

The Government and the Ministry of Sports should be at the forefront advocating for top talent in the nation. It is the only way the country can get to have the next Abdul Nafiu Idrissu.

The demand for football in Ghana is high. However, it is sad that with the high population in Ghana of about 28.83 million most of them feast their eyes to European Leagues.

This is especially the English Premier League. So this leaves the local league starving without fans.

Imagine this situation if a Ghanaian football fan is an avid Manchester City fan who will cheer on Kotoko?

The GFA should really market the local league. Even if it means giving out some few free tickets for local games anything goes as long as the Local league gets to grow.

The GFA is the standard regulatory body in Ghana. If football has to develop, then it all starts from the inside.

The wrangles and the drama of who will be the next President of GFA should stop.

Moreover, there is a need for local industries to invest in and support the football industry. It all starts with the nation itself.
