Constable Bhekifa Zabane a national medal holder in long range shooting

Const Zabane proudly admits he is the owner of a few guns but his preference is the R5 rifle which has brought him recognition in his field.

Const Bhekifa Luckyboy Zabane is a national bronze medalist in long-range shooting after participating in the Bloemfontein rifle competition during which members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) competed against each other.

The competition took place from 2 to 11 August with various competitors showcasing their shooting skills, including the South African Defense Force (SANDF) and international teams and individuals from countries like Belgium and the Netherlands.

The constable was also part of the gold medal winning SAPS mixed team and a silver medalist as part of the overall SAPS team.

The constable is a marksman – an accurate one.

Growing up in Mbombela, Const Zabane has made Ermelo his home after getting a post at the Sheepmoor Police Station.

Some would call Const Zabane a newbie in the force as he has only been a member for the past two years.

However, he has vast experiences handling guns and criminals with a career in nature conservation.

“I was part of the anti-poaching unit because I am qualified in nature conservation,” Const Zabane said.

It was during his years at the Tshwane University of Technology where his love for the sport began.

Const Zabane showed promise in the firearm course and was selected to participate in competitions for the institution.

That began a haul of individual and team medals and awards of which he is very proud.

His first career choice did not leave room to settle down and that was when he gravitated towards the police force.

“I had paid my dues and needed to settle down, and the force was a given because it is in line with what I did in the anti-poaching unit.”

His love for long-range shooting continued in the force when he was once again introduced to the sport by a friend and colleague.

The sport has gained him lifelong friendships and he was introduced to hunting as a hobby.

“I hunt in my spare time and use the game meat for biltong, all within the perimetres of the law of course.”

Const Zabane proudly admits he is the owner of a few guns, and his preference is the R5 rifle which has brought him recognition in his field.

He is also a rugby player and is part of a competing team based in Ermelo.

“I like being active and lead an active lifestyle to keep up with everything that I do.”

The marksman is looking forward to climbing the ranks in the force and he wants to eventually be part of the K9 Unit because he also loves dogs.

“I will continue to compete and grow in the sport and my career so there is still a lot to look forward to on that front,” Const Zabane concluded.

Const Bhekifa Zabane from the Sheepmoor Police Station won bronze at a rifle shooting competition earlier this month. This marksman is an avid hunter and makes sure he never misses his target.
