Runners tackle second Shalom half marathon

Both last year’s records, men and women, were broken in the 21,1 kilometre race and each new record holder went away with the incentive over and above the winner’s prize.

Runners took part in the second annual Shalom half marathon that was held at the AJ Swanepoel Stadium on Saturday, 25 August.

The event seems to be growing both in magnitude and class as more than 100 athletes from all over Mpumalanga participated.

The organisers are already looking forward to exceeding this year’s number of entrants next year.

The winners are.

The 21,1km men’s race:

1. Ntuthuko Maseko: 1:13,20 (new record)

2. Richmond Tjusala: 1:17,23

3. Simon Sibisi : 1:20,14

The women’s 21,1km race:

1. Jelome Hellerie (Ermelo Marathon Cub) 1:43,46 (new record)

2. Geraldine 1:48,07

3. Wilma Snyman (Ermelo Marathon Club) 1:52,24

The 10km men’s race:

1. Philani Mkhwanazi (Nedbank) 33:35

2. Nkosinathi Thwala (Dolile Team) 37:11

3. Sibusiso Ncongwane (Shalom Marathon Club) 37:12

The women’s 10km race:

1. Smangele Shabangu (Shalom Marathon Club) 52:12

2. Lenie van Zyl (Ermelo Marathon Club) 55:27

3. Jabu Thusi (SANDF) 56:50

Both men and women’s records of last year were broken in the 21,1km race and each new record holder went away with the incentive over and above the winner’s prize.

The race is scheduled to take place on 17 August next year.
