The MCC is a committee working hand in hand with the municipality in the Local Economic Development (LED) office to improve local development.

Another burning issue was the committee’s dissatisfaction with the LED office in not assisting with disbanding the MCC structure.

The MLDC listed in the memorandum their reasons for the MCC’s disbanding:

• No reporting back to the community regarding awarding of bursaries and learnerships.

• No transparency with regard to disclosing mines’ contribution to the local economy, infrastructure and development.

• No feedback about the number of small businesses that have benefited under their leadership.

The MLDC gave the municipality seven working days for a response with Mr Maluleke signing the memorandum.

A follow-up meeting between the municipality and the MLDC was held on 12 March.

However, according to MLDC members, the meeting was disrupted by alleged MCC members who continuously provoked Mr Maluleke who was giving the municipality’s response.

Committee members alleged Mr Lucky Nhlapho, MLDC chairman, tried to restore order and elaborate on the memorandum handed over on 1 March, but was forced to leave the platform by a MCC member.

No resolution was brought forward as to whether the MCC would be disbanded.

However, MLDC confidently stated they will take over from the MCC and resumed their duties on 12 March.

The office bearers of the MLDC committee consist of Messrs Nhlapho as chairman, Sibusiso Sibeko as deputy chairman, Nhlanhla Mthembu as treasurer, Oscar Mahaye as secretary and David Jansen as deputy secretary.

In the latest developments, the Highvelder received reports that the MLDC has withdrawn their stance on the matter.

According to MLDC members, they still regard the MCC as the official structure.
