The Highvelder first reported on the matter in 2013 with a follow-up in 2016 and five years later, residents are still afflicted.

The situation has worsened for Ms Doris Nkosi, whose yard is flooded.

“Every summer when it rains, my yard is filled to the brim with the stench surrounding my house,” she said.

When the Highvelder visited the area, learners from nearby New Ermelo Primary School were walking near the flowing water and a fleshy cow’s head riddled with flies and maggots could be seen.

There are incidents of children falling and playing in the water with one resident having to stop his car, fearing a girl child was hurt only to find she had been playing in the water.

The abattoir in question, owned by Mr Berto Kleynhans, said the cause of the bloody water was because of the blocked drains that the municipality had to unblock.
