Gert Sibande secondary students debate over road safety

The debates are dedicated to young road users who travel the roads as pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, novice drivers and passengers.

As part of government’s many initiatives to strengthen road safety, various secondary school learners around Gert Sibande District converged at the Batho Pele Building on Saturday to debate and compete on road safety matters.

The debates were initiated in 2004 after the road crash statistics showed that at least 40 percent of fatalities involved young people aged between zero to twenty five.

These debates are therefore dedicated to young road users who travel the roads as pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, novice drivers and passengers.

The learners were adamant that negligence and recklessness contributed the most to road accidents and urged young users to be alert and obey the rules of the road including being legal of age to drive.

The provincial finals will take place at Mpumalanga Traffic Training College at Bushbuckridge Local Municipality on 26 August.

The outstanding learners at provincial competitions are expected to represent the province at national competitions that will be hosted by the North West Province later this year.
