Work on fence stalled

Work has come to a standstill and the southern side of the grounds in Smuts Street has been left entirely unfenced.

The fence being erected round the Ermelo Civic Centre remains a controversial issue for many residents of Ermelo.

In February, contractors seemingly wasted no time and within days, long sections of the fence were erected along the perimeter of the grounds along Breytenbach and Kerk Street, while only a short section was erected along the northern side in Taute Street.

Since then, work has come to a standstill and the southern side of the grounds in Smuts Street has been left entirely unfenced.

As yet, no gates have been installed at any of the entrances.

When asked why further work on the fence had been stopped, the municipal spokesman Mr Mandla Zwane said the installation had stalled due to the development of designs for the two main entrance and exit points.

“There will be an allowance for a lane for public motorists as well as council officials with controlled accesses. Allowance will also be made for pedestrians and officials.

“There will be two guard houses at the two main entrance and exit points,” he said.

The fence is similar to the one that was erected round Pet Dam last year, presumably to control access.

Since its completion, no gates have been closed or locked and no access control has been enforced.

Gate posts are also already showing signs of rust.
