New minister for Methodist Church

Thokozani firmly believes that ministry is not a career but a calling and plans to encourage and guide especially the youth to experience the joys of belonging to a large family of believers.

The Ermelo Methodist Church in Burger Street recently welcomed a new minister, Rev Thokozani Mthembu, his wife Thando and their 9-month-old daughter to the parish.

Rev Thokozani completed his term of seminary at the end of last year and will serve as probational minister at Ermelo Methodist Church, which is his inaugural parish.

His ordination as a full-time minister is due to follow after the probational period ends in 2019.

Originally from KwaMashu in KwaZulu-Natal, this quietly spoken young man’s love for the Lord and passion to serve was pleasantly evident when interviewed by the Highvelder.

“I was still in high school when I met the Lord. I was at a church service when, during the sermon, I heard that there was a God who knew me even before I was formed.

“I was a typical youngster, searching for identity and meaning in life and was involved with youth groups, but until that moment I had not yet understood the profound and deeper meaning of being a Christian and following the Lord.”

After matriculating in 2004, Thokozani enrolled at the University of Zululand where he studied Theology.

“Although I had obtained a bursary to study, I was only able to complete my studies in 2009 because of financial restraints and the bursary not covering everything. But I persevered and always with Matthew 5:16 in mind: ‘Put your trust in the Lord and all things will follow’, I managed to push through and came out stronger in my belief,” he said.

Thokozani firmly believes that ministry is not a career but a calling and plans to encourage and guide especially the youth to experience the joys of belonging to a large family of believers.

“Being a believer is to live a full and exciting life like anybody else, but always knowing that the Lord knew you and loved you even before you were born.”

A lover of nature, sport and action movies, Thokozani and Thando have already endeared themselves to the Ermelo Methodist congregation and are sure to be loved and respected by one and all.
