Eskom commences with power interruptions

To avoid supply interruptions, defaulting municipalities need to meet three requirements.

Eskom commenced the interruption of supply to the eMalahleni and Msukaligwa Local Municipalities yesterday as communicated in their final decision notice.

This was as a result of non-payment and the power utility says it’s an agonising decision for them and it’s means of last resort.

In a statement, Eskom said in-spite of the fact that both the provisions of Electricity Regulations Act of 2006 and supply agreements with municipalities which empowers them to disconnect electricity completely, they have opted for a softer approach of interrupting electricity during certain hours in the day.

To avoid supply interruptions, defaulting municipalities need to meet certain requirements which include:

  • A cash payment as negotiated with each municipality
  • A written undertaking in the form of a Council Resolution that current accounts will be honoured going forward
  • A payment plan for the areas supported by a Council Resolution

Should the municipalities meet these requirements, their supply interruptions will be suspended.

Eskom also advised that interested parties may direct their queries to their respective defaulting municipalities as they are not at liberty to discuss customer accounts with third parties.
