MEC takes learners to prison

"Learners across the province have been to various correctional facilities where they interacted with Correctional Service Officials and inmates who shared some of their stories and circumstances that led them into prison and their experience in jail"

MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison Vusi Shongwe will take with him learners from identified secondary schools to Barberton Correctional Facilities tomorrow (Wednesday).

This is part of the annual School Prison visits aimed at bringing learners close to reality of how prison life.

Shongwe said this is also to dispel myths among young people that life is good in prison.

Learners across the province have been to various correctional facilities where they interacted with Correctional Service Officials and inmates who shared some of their stories and circumstances that led them into prison and their experience in jail.

The department believes that these visits will discourage the youth from being tempted to pursue crime.

More than 220 learners from various schools in Ehlanzeni Region will be attending the programme from Wednesday to Monday.
