Chief Albert Luthuli averts power cuts

If the municipality should not adhere strictly to the terms of the agreement, power would be cut.

The lights in Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality will stay on in spite of a R33 million electricity debt.

Eskom has had several engagements with the municipality, culminating in an agreement in principle according to which Eskom has suspended the disconnection of the bulk electricity supply scheduled for Monday, 11 April.

The interruption would have seen consumers experiencing eight hours without electricity daily during the week and six hours over weekends.

It was made clear that, if the municipality should not adhere strictly to the terms of the agreement, power would be cut.

Municipal spokesman Mr David Nhlabathi said the municipality is pleased with the agreement and will continue supplying power to the community.

“We have already begun working on implementing our revenue collection plan to ensure that we collect enough to be able to keep to the agreement and deliver service to our people,” said Mr Nhlabathi in a telephonic interview.

Chief Albert Luthuli is one of three municipalities Eskom has reached a payment agreement with. The others are Mkhondo (Piet Retief) and Thaba Chweu (Mashishing/Lydenburg) local municipalities.
