Operation Fiela sweeps through Ermelo CBD

Random searches of individuals on the street revealed incidents of possession of dagga and illegal immigrants were also arrested.

Operation Fiela swept through the CBD of Ermelo again on Thursday and Friday last week, targeting informal traders and general dealers who were not in possession of valid trading licences and who did comply with health and safety regulations and municipal by-laws.

Operation Fiela is periodically conducted on a national scale.

The Ermelo operation involved several sections of law enforcement and policing and was deemed a great success by the various role players that included the SA Police Services, the Police’s K9 unit, the Department of Internal Affairs, Gert Sibande Department of Health, municipal and provincial traffic departments and Ermelo Fire and Protection Services.

Dealers who were trading without trading licences were fined, and those whose places of business did not comply with fire and safety regulations were either fined or issued with . Goods and merchandise on display on pavements were removed to within the 2m clearance zone as required by law.

A disturbing factor found at many of the small businesses selling edible goods was that many of the products had far exceeded their sell-by dates, yet were still being offered for sale.

Random searches of individuals on the street revealed incidents of possession of dagga and illegal immigrants were also arrested.
