Lucky escape for truck driver

The driver was trapped in the wreckage for close to an hour.

The driver of a fully laden coal truck was lucky to escape with only minor cuts and bruises after the truck rear-ended a light motor vehicle and overturned on Sunday night.

The accident happened shortly after 22:00 on the road between Ermelo and Hendrina, just east of the Thusi intersection.

The driver was trapped in the wreckage for close to an hour as emergency workers from Msukaligwa Fire and Rescue battled to free his right leg which had been pinned in the twisted wreckage.

He was stabilized on the scene by Mpumalanga EMS and ER24 personnel and transported to the Ermelo Provincial Hospital where he was treated and discharged.

The occupants of the light motor vehicle were unscathed.

In a separate incident, three people suffered moderate to light injuries when the vehicle in which they were travelling left the road and overturned on the road between Hendrina and Breyten at about 02:45 on Monday morning.

Two of the injured were treated on the scene by Mpumalanga EMS and ER24 personnel before being transported to the Ermelo Provincial Hospital.
