GSDM hosts career day

Municipality hosts career day.

The Gert Sibande District Municipality recently hosted a Youth Information Career Development event at the Mayor’s Parlour where learners from different high schools within the district municipality were given information on various career opportunities.

Different stakeholders were present with their exhibition stands, such as Damelin/Intec College, GS College, Department of Education, SAPS, NYDA, Mshiniwam and Lillies Modelling School.

Sibusiso Masilela from the Department of Education informed the learners about the bursaries available from the the department, how to apply for them and the qualifying criteria. According to Mr Masilela, the Department of Education only gives bursaries to South African students who are academically deserving students.

Such funding covers accommodation, meals, prescribed textbooks and a stipend.

Mduduzi Nkambule from GS College shared with the learners some of the advantages of studying at a TVET college. Mr Nkambule said the college is immediately accessible, offers a high standard of education envied by many as well as practical work.

According to Mr Nkambule, a number of employers are looking for people with practical experience and the college’s curriculum offers exactly that.

s “The college is surrounded by highly industrial areas and our college offers one of the best practical education systems where our students spend most time doing practical work which puts them in line with a number of employers’ needs in the area and elsewhere,” said Mr Nkambule.

The police also had an opportunity to address the learners where they explained the different duties they are entrusted with and several opportunities within the police. The qualifying age in the police is now 18 to 30 years old, no longer 35.

NYDA spoke to the learners about bursaries and other entrepreneurship opportunities that they fund and encouraged them to make use of their services.

Lilies Modelling School told the learners that they assist young teenage boys and girls get professional modelling contracts with registered agencies.

For those interested in artisan qualifications, Loraine Clough from Mshiniwam explained the training they offer and the help in finding them jobs with one of the big companies affiliated with them.

She also advised them to use the Department of Labour, because that is where they go when they are looking for people to train.

The learners also got to know about opportunities within the district municipality in its Library and Records Management division.
