Msukaligwa faces backlash over water wastage at reservoirs

Basson provided several videos and photographs sent to her by a local resident, showing the spillage of clean drinking water

ERMELO – Highvelder followed up on a tip from Juliette Basson, the Patriotic Alliance (PA) candidate for Ward 7, regarding significant water spillage from the Southern reservoirs on the road to Amersfoort, and made a startling discovery of water wastage.

Basson provided several videos and photographs sent to her by a local resident, showing the spillage of clean drinking water.

The investigation revealed that this water leaks from the reservoirs into two large ponds on the premises, and then flows through a field, creating lush greenery.

It passes beneath the railway tracks and into two dams on a nearby plot, reportedly built to capture the runoff, as a local source informs the paper.

The source also indicated that this has been ongoing for many years.

Livestock were seen drinking from these overflowing dams.

The excess water continues along the railway tracks for kilometres until it ultimately reaches the Klein Drinkwater River.

The source accompanied Highvelder and Basson to this spot. There, the paper observed clean water mixing with raw sewage as both flowed directly into the river.

The mixture creates foaming streams that run under the railway bridge.

Basson expressed her concerns, noting the irony of the situation.

“The community is already facing severe water restrictions, with the municipality just recently threatening fines for any breaches of its level 2 water restrictions.

“Yet we’re witnessing thousands of litres of water being wasted due to leaks at the reservoirs, which I’m sure the municipality is aware of.”
