High cost prevents more traffic lights in Fourie Street, says Msukaligwa Municipality

Some say stop signs will only worsen the problem, as most truck drivers and motorists ignore them, and instead suggested more traffic lights, speed bumps and traffic officials on duty.

ERMELO – Msukaligwa Local Municipality responded to enquiries regarding the safety measures in Fourie Streets, after emergency services attended to several accidents at the intersection of Fourie and De Jager streets, leaving residents fuming about the safety of motorists.

Residents in the area are of the opinion the road needs some serious intervention from the municipality before someone gets killed in an accident.

Some say stop signs will only worsen the problem, as most truck drivers and motorists ignore them, and instead suggested more traffic lights, speed bumps and traffic officials on duty.

Shortly after the newspaper sent media enquiries to Mandla Zwane, the spokesperson for the Msukaligwa Local Municipality, regarding the road’s condition and the lack of safety measures, Zwane responded and said it is not possible to erect more traffic lights in Fourie Street due to the high cost.

“The cost is estimated at R700 000 per intersection,” he said.

He said since a truck had destroyed a pizzeria in the area, traffic officers are more often busy with speed monitoring and patrolling the streets.
