Carolina woman arrested for alleged assaults on 10-year-old niece

It is not clear what led to this incident or what motivated the woman's actions.

CAROLINA – A 30-year-old woman from Silobela Informal Settlement was arrested for assault with the intent to cause grievous body harm, allegedly assaulting her 10-year-old niece.

According to Sergeant Thabang Mokwana, a spokesperson for the Carolina SAPS, the Grade Four learner was attending school when a teacher noticed a bruise near the child’s left ear.

When they enquired about it, the child told them about the incident. They alerted the local school safety officer.

“A docket was opened and the child was taken to Carolina Hospital for medical treatment.”

Mokwana said it is alleged that the woman had arrived at the child’s house, angry, and took the child into a room and locked the door.

“She then allegedly assaulted the child with a belt, and though the child kept crying and screaming for help, and asking for forgiveness, the woman did not stop.”

The mother, who was in the kitchen at the time, could not help as the door was locked from the inside.

Afterwards the woman allegedly told them they can report her to the police, and that they will find her at home.

It is not clear what led to this incident, or what motivated the woman’s actions.

She was arrested on February 22 and appeared in the Carolina Magistrate’s Court the following day, where she was granted R1 000 bail.

The case was postponed to March 29.
