Looking at retirement living options

If you are thinking about making the big move to retirement living, make sure to consider these ten points before you do.

Finding the right retirement option to suit your lifestyle and your future needs is going to be key in ensuring that you choose the perfect place to spend your golden years. To help you do just that, Just Property has shared ten questions you should be asking before you make your decision. Take a look:

  1. Am I buying a life right or sectional title?  If you are looking at a life right model, ask for an in-depth breakdown of the T&C’s, as these differ from place to place.
  1. May I see a copy of the contract, including the rules and regulations?  Regardless of the retirement option you are interested in, it is crucial to understand exactly what you are buying into…and to check that what is on offer and allowed is going to work for your lifestyle.
  1. Would I be able to upgrade/downscale over time?  Are you allowed to modify your home? It is a good idea to be able to upgrade or downscale your living arrangements to suit your needs in the future. You don’t want to be stuck in a situation that might be good for you now, but won’t be suitable ten years’ down the line.
  1. What levies are applicable, and what do they cover? Knowing what your monthly levies cover will make it much easier to budget and plan your monthly living expenses. It will also give you a good way to compare value for money in different retirement estates. Also ask about special levies.
  1. Rates and taxes, water and electricity – how are these charged, and what are the applicable tariffs?  Again, you want to be able to budget and understand the financial implications of this move in the long run to ensure that your pension will cover your monthly expenses.
  1. What medical facilities and services are available? Is assisted living an option? Does the estate offer a frail care facility? Is there a nurse or GP on the estate or nearby? How far away is the nearest hospital? You might be fit as a fiddle right now, but it is wise to know if these options are available, should you require them in the future.
  1. What lifestyle services are on offer?  Generally, retirement estates have a hairdresser on site, provide cooked meals two to three times a day or have a restaurant, and offer exercise activities such as an indoor gym and/or outdoor walking trails, a pool and maybe even a bowling green. Are there opportunities to socialise and is entertainment provided for residents?
  1. Do you have security services and provisions in place?  Safety is paramount. Ask what safety measures are available and in place to ensure peace of mind.
  1. What is your pet policy? Many retirement estates do not allow pets or have very strict rules about the number and type of pets permitted. If having a furry companion is a must, check if you are allowed to bring your pet with.
  2. Are visiting family/friends allowed to stay over when visiting? If visitors are not allowed to stay with you, there might be accommodation provided for visitors in the estate.
