Amersfoort man (29) arrested in connection with the murder of his girlfriend

According to a provincial police spokesperson, Brig Selvy Mohlala, after allegedly committing the crime, Shabangu allegedly went on to assault the victim's brother who had tried to rescue Zwane.

AMERSFOORT – Gender-based violence perpetrators have been warned by the provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Manamela, that police officers will not take such crimes lightly.

This comes after Charlie Shabangu (29) was detained in the early hours of June 6 in Zamokuhle Section in connection with the murder of his girlfriend, Nomalanga Zwane (34), whom he allegedly stabbed to death with a sharp weapon.

Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, a spokesman for the provincial police, claimed that after allegedly perpetrating the crime, Shabangu attacked the victim’s brother who had attempted to save Zwane.

“After allegedly committing these crimes, he fled the scene, allegedly with Zwane’s phones as well as that of his brother, and has been on the run ever since,” Mohlala said.

Residents recently notified police members about the whereabouts of the suspect after he was allegedly spotted hitch-hiking from Piet Retief towards the direction of Wakkerstroom.

Upon noticing the police, Shabangu attempted to flee, but was arrested
on scene.

“Shabangu was charged for murder as well as for assault with intent to cause grievous harm, and was taken to Amersfoort Magistrate’s Court for his first appearance.”

The case was postponed to July 20 for legal representation and he remains in police custody until then.
