Msukaligwa Local Municipality receives 10 242 requests for utility bills to be emailed

Residents who have not yet registered to pay for services should do so using the forms available at the municipal building's entrance.

ERMELO – Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM) urges residents to pay their utility bills.

According to MLM’s spokesperson, Mr Mandla Zwane, the municipality has lost close to R2m in the recent protests held by residents at the municipal buildings in March and April.

“As a result of the protests, several residents who came to pay for services were forced to return without paying, which resulted in bills not being paid,” Mr Zwane said.

Residents who have not yet registered to pay for services should do so using the forms available at the municipal building’s entrance.

“About 1 242 residents requested that their utility bills be sent by email, and we want to make sure they receive them by next week. The system was delayed, but we are presently working to ensure residents receive their bills.”

MLM is also working on establishing an online system and app that would make it easier for residents to pay for services.

“There is an indigent subsidy for residents who cannot pay for services to ensure that indigent households receive basic services. The requirements for the indigent subsidy are that the municipal account holder must be the owner of the house, the household must earn a monthly income of no more than R3 900, and they must not use electricity at a rate that exceeds 20 amps.”

Residents have previously expressed their dissatisfaction with difficulties in contacting the municipal contact centre.
