Ex-offenders unite with community leaders

“Most of the youth hero-worship us because of our past gangster lives and think that crime is cool. But as their heroes we want to warn them that crime does not pay and we are living proof of that,”

Wesselton Community Development Workers (CDW) recently met with Constructive Accord of Prisoners (CAP) to establish working relations that could benefit the community of Ermelo, especially the youth.
The CAP consists of ex-convicts that have served their jail sentence; some are on parole and want to impart their skills acquired in prison.
According to the group’s chairman, S’busiso Sithole, some of their objectives are to work with community and Christian groups for a sustainable youth and to offer skills development.
“Most of the youth hero-worship us because of our past gangster lives and think that crime is cool.
But as their heroes we want to warn them that crime does not pay and we are living proof of that,” said S’busiso during the meeting.
The CDW representatives also committed themselves to working with the group, as they are relevant figures in the fight against crime.
Ward 5 CDW member Nokuthula Zulu appreciated the initiative by the CAP group and committed themselves to taking seriously initiatives aimed at community development and youth upliftment.
