New heights for Cambridge FC

The Cambridge Football Club was recently promoted to the SAB Castle League following play-offs.

After winning the Mackenzieville Alrapark Football Association (MAFA) league, Cambridge FC made its way to the South African Football Association (Safa) Ekurhuleni regional play-offs over the weekend of September 4.

These matches were held in Bedfordview and Riegerpark in Boksburg, respectively over the weekend.

Cambridge FC was drawn in group A alongside Daveyton United from Daveyton, Tkzee FC from Germiston and the Blue Army FC from Thokoza.

At 09:00 on September 4, Cambridge took to the field against Blue Army at the Bedfordview Country Club (BCC) with Cambridge dominating the match from the word go, showing their hunger to get promoted.

Striker Bafana Congwane (Jones) placed the ball in the right corner of the net past the opposition keeper in the second half.

Substitute Monahang Moeketsie scored a beautiful team goal to make it 2 – 0 for Cambridge.

The following day saw the team in Boksburg play its second game against Tkzee FC.

The first half of the match saw Cambridge leading 1-0 followed by an even stronger second half.

Cambridge walked away victorious with a 3 -2 win, which ensured them the top spot of group A with six points.
On the same day at 13:00, Cambridge FC played its last group game against Daveyton United, only needing a draw to pull through.

Cambridge won the game with a final score of 3-1, ensuring their new place in the South African Breweries (SAB) Castle League.

“After so many years of trying and always bowing out in the last game, we finally made it,” said delighted coach Ignatius Maphike. “This was all for the benefit of the community of Nigel. We are now on the map and we would like to thank everyone for their support and encouragement.

“We can only go higher from here.”
