Shades of grey

Learn how to decorate with this much-loved neutral.

Whether your taste tends towards classic or contemporary, there is a shade of grey just for you. This gorgeous colour has been top of many decorators’ lists for several years now and instead of fading, its popularity has soared – especially since it was chosen (along with a vibrant yellow) as one of Pantone’s colours for 2021.

Used in isolation, pale grey can be cold and dark grey can be oppressive, so it’s important you know how to use all shades of grey for best results.

These décor tips will help…

  • Grey is best when teamed with other greys, so be prepared to layer.
  • Pale and mid-greys look fantastic teamed with hot shades such as orange and bright yellow; they also blend well with soft blue and other watery hues – especially if you add metallic accents.
  • To create a calm, timeless palette, combine grey with other neutrals such as sand, stone and white. Incorporate wooden elements to enhance the effect.
  • For a sophisticated space, mix darker greys with inky blue, jet black or magenta.
  • Grey and beige are a surprisingly stylish pair. There’s even a paint colour called greige to prove it!
  • Charcoal grey is a fantastic alternative to black or dark blue, especially in upholstery or rugs, and can be dressed up or down.
  • If you have pale grey walls, opt for darker couches and cushions, or items with pattern, to create a striking contrast. For dark grey walls, choose pale furniture and accessories to soften the ambiance, or add pops of colour.
