Fun and easy DIY crafty gift ideas for Father’s Day

Tomorrow – Sunday, 20 June – is Father’s Day! You don’t have to spend a fortune to make dad feel special this Father’s Day. Help the kids make these cool and crafty gifts.

Dad’s stache

Use our free ‘Dad’s Stache’ printable available here to create this nostalgic gift. We created a goodie bag and filled a lovely glass jar with all of dad’s favourite treats. Get your little one to help fill the jar. Counting the chocolates and colour sorting is all part of the fun of filling the jar and a fun way to incorporate learning with play.

Top tip: For handy dads, there’s nothing better than receiving a lovingly packed goodie bag filled with some much-needed tools. Repackaged biltong and Japanese crackers are also a firm favourite.

Dad rocks

This is a wonderful sensory exercise for your little one with repetitive pincer-grip practice for little hands.

Supplies you will need:

• DAS air-dry clay or any moulding clay (you can get this at most craft stores).
• A pencil
• A selection of small stones.

How to make it:

• Mould the clay into a somewhat flat and approximately 2cm-thick disk.
• Using a pencil, trace out the wording or lay your selected stones on a flat surface to see how they will fill the space.
• With some guidance, get your little one to help place and secure the stones into the clay.
• Once complete, press on the stones one more time to make sure they are secure.
• Simply lay your clay and rock art out in the sun to dry, which should take about a day.

Ice-cream-stick penholder

Ice-cream sticks offer many wonderful arts and crafts possibilities, so they’re always a great item to keep in your craft box.

You’ll need:

• Washi tape (or any other type of sticky tape)
• At least 12-15 ice-cream sticks
• An empty tin
• Ribbon and twine

How to make it:

• Place two strips of Washi tape on a clean surface with the sticky sides facing up.
• Turn over the ends so as to secure your tape to the surface.
• Starting in the centre, get your tot to lay down the sticks one at a time, side by side.
• Press down on each ice-cream stick so that they’re secure.
• Lift up the tape and ice-cream sticks and wrap around your tin.
• With a little twine and ribbon, secure the sticks by tying a nice tight bow.

Monkey card

Nothing says ‘I love you’ more than a cute card that was made especially for dad. Help your little one make this adorable Monkey card for him this Father’s Day.

Supplies you’ll need:

• A selection of pencils or crayons.
• Our printable DIY Father’s Day monkey card.

How to make the card:

• Use the message provided for the wording (or write your own message).
• Make pencil markings to show where you want the monkeys to hang.
• Help your little one to make a heart print with her thumb in the space provided.
• Then make your monkeys. The thumb works well for the body and the index finger for the head.
• Place your twine across the page so that it’s in reach of the monkeys.
• Finish off by drawing arms, ears, face and legs for the monkeys.
